The Bosch Series 4 MAF462B0GB normally costs around £100, so it only makes this list thanks to a discount that is running. While it lasts, you get a lot for the money: 2050W rated power, a 40-200°C temperature range, top and bottom heating, dishwasher-safe removable parts and a two-year guarantee.
Its most interesting feature is the heating, more than the seven presets. Most air fryers at this price heat from a single element above the basket, so the underside of food can brown less than the top. Bosch heats from underneath as well, which it says gives more even cooking. You will probably still shake chips halfway through, but it is a real point of difference. The 40°C minimum is also well below the Tefal’s 70°C, and there are separate keep-warm and defrost settings.
The 6.1-litre basket is a good size for most households. It measures about 22.6cm square and 13.4cm deep, so there is more room to spread out chips or chicken pieces than in the Tefal’s 21cm-square basket. It is rated for up to four portions. The obvious compromise is the single drawer, which cannot cook two foods at different settings.

The Tefal Easy Fry Max EY245B40 is the straightforward value pick. At £59 it leaves around £16 of the budget spare, and you still get a 5-litre basket, ten automatic programmes, a dishwasher-safe basket and a two-year guarantee. Check the model code before you order, though. The EY245B40 is the grey version, which is being cleared at a reduced price, so stock may not last. The black EY245840 has the same specification but costs around £80.
The 5-litre basket is smaller than the Bosch’s but big enough for everyday meals. Tefal says it takes up to 1kg of food, and Argos puts it nearer 0.8kg for frozen chips. Either way, leave room for the hot air to move rather than filling it to the top. The ten programmes (chips, chicken, steak, fish, vegetables, pizza, nuggets, prawns, bacon and dessert) are handy starting points, and you can change the time and temperature on any of them.
What you give up is flexibility. The temperature starts at 70°C rather than 40°C, there is no second drawer, and the basket floor is a little smaller than the Bosch’s. On the plus side, Tefal commits to supplying spare parts for almost all its products for 15 years, which is reassuring on a cheaper appliance.

The Salter EK4750 Dual Air Fryer Pro is the odd one out here. Its 7.4 litres are split between two 3.7-litre drawers, and each drawer has its own time and temperature. Press Sync and two foods with different settings finish together. Match copies one drawer’s settings to the other, which is handy for a double batch of the same food.
That layout is the main reason to buy it. Chicken can go in one drawer and chips or vegetables in the other, each at its own setting. The downside is that you never get one 7.4-litre space. A bigger batch of chicken thighs laid flat, for example, is limited to what fits in a single drawer. If you mostly cook one food at a time, one 6.1-litre basket like the Bosch’s is usually the more practical shape.
Two things to know before buying. The guarantee is one year as standard, or three if you register within 30 days. And Salter’s cleaning advice doesn’t agree with itself: its website says the drawers are dishwasher safe in one place and not in another. The manual only mentions warm, soapy water, so we would wash them by hand. The manual also asks for 20cm of free space on every side while it runs, so measure your worktop first.

Bosch vs Tefal vs Salter: Which One Should You Buy?
The litre figures are the least useful place to start. Think about how you usually cook instead.
The Bosch is the best all-rounder while it stays within budget. If you usually cook one main batch for two to four people, it has the bigger of the two single baskets, heats from above and below, and goes down to 40°C for gentler jobs. If you are unsure which to pick, start here.
The Tefal is for buyers who care more about the price than the extra space. For everyday chips, chicken and vegetables for one to three people, it does the job for about £11 less than the Bosch and £16 less than the Salter. You lose some basket space and the lower temperatures, but the essentials are all there.
Pick the Salter for its layout. It has the biggest capacity figure in the table, but that number is split in two. Two drawers really help when a meal has two parts that need different settings, and they get in the way when you want to cook one big batch.

These are upper limits, and a real bill will usually be lower. Rated power is the most the appliance is designed to draw, and the element switches on and off to hold the set temperature, so it does not draw full power for the whole 30 minutes. Your tariff, cooking time, temperature, how full the basket is and, with the Salter, whether you use one drawer or both all make a difference.

4. Check the live price
Under £75 is a price bracket shaped by discounts. All three models here were reduced when we checked, and the Bosch’s offer has an end date.
